Young Church
Information for young Catholics in Aotearoa New Zealand
“Christ is alive! He is our hope, and in a wonderful way he brings youth to our world, and everything he touches becomes young, new, full of life. The very first words, then, that I would like to say to every young Christian are these: Christ is alive and he wants you to be alive!” Christus Vivit
Pope Francis wrote Christus Vivit, an Apostolic Exhortation which is a sort of holy open letter, to the young people of the world. Young people are important to the Catholic Church, as you are our future.
It is difficult to maintain our faith and our values amidst so much temptation in this secular world, especially for young people. Social media is meant to bring us together, but can so often lead to pressure, anxiety and a false sense of friendship. Even in today’s world of connectivity, it is easy to feel isolated and lonely.
"He is in you, he is with you and he never abandons you. However far you may wander, he is always there, the Risen One. He calls you and he waits for you to return to him and start over again. When you feel you are growing old out of sorrow, resentment or fear, doubt or failure, he will always be there to restore your strength and your hope." Christus Vivit
There are many opportunities for you to meet up and worship with like-minded friends in the Catholic Church. For Tamariki and Teens, most parishes have a youth group and details for these will be on the parish website. Our Catholic schools often have regional shared activities, so students can get to know each other and form friendships. Each diocese has a dedicated youth team or co-ordinator to help you find a path to a group that will suit you. As rangatahi enter university, often living away from the family home for the first time, the University Chaplaincy can provide useful support as you find your way.
This page provides information about how the Church in Aotearoa New Zealand is trying to meet the needs of young people. Young Church co-ordinators are passionate about providing the tools you need to be a resilient Catholic, walking your pathway to authentic and lifelong discipleship.
