Faithful Anticipation
I used to share an office with several Religious Studies teachers, and stuck on the door was a cartoon with the caption: “Jesus is Coming – look busy!” It often made me smile. It is important not to be dogged by anxiety about ‘end times’. We really can’t do anything about it.
That said, it is intimidating to hear Jesus speak about the return of the Son of Man in today’s Gospel. Jesus emphasises the need for vigilance and readiness, as no one knows the exact time of these events, except God the Father.
While this passage is unsettling with its vivid imagery of the apocalypse, it also carries a message of hope and encouragement. Jesus assures us that despite turmoil and uncertainty, God’s plan will ultimately prevail.
All we can do is make sure we are focused on our relationship with God and His will for us. I find the whole idea of ‘end times’ humbling. No matter what our position in life, there is a plan for us that is beyond our reach and understanding.
We are reminded of the transient nature of our earthly existence and the importance of focusing on what truly matters. The Gospel invites us to examine our lives and priorities. Are we living in a way that reflects our faith and hope in God’s promises? Are we prepared to meet the Lord, not just at the end of time, but in our daily encounters and experiences? Are we loving each other and God, as the Son asked?
The call to stay alert and be prepared is not about living in fear but about living in faithful anticipation of God’s promises.
