Ignatian Spirituality

Born in 1491, St Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish Priest, and one of the founders of the religious order of the Society of Jesus, otherwise known as the Jesuits. He is famous for his Spiritual Exercises which were designed to be experienced as part of a spiritual retreat, and this is how they are used even today. Out of these exercises came what we recognise today as Ignatian Spirituality.

St Ignatius wrote about important and powerful ways of praying, and here is just a very brief overview of a vast subject. There are plenty of websites devoted to St Ignatius and the Jesuits that will provide plenty more information if you want it, written by experts in this field.

The Examen

One way of praying that we find in Ignatian Spirituality, is the Examen. This is a reflective way of looking at your day, and with the help of God, incorporating a spiritual examination of how you responded to events and the people you encountered. You pray not only for forgiveness, but the clarity to see how you can do life better.

The website for the Jesuits in the UK is a fantastic resource for the Examen and the other aspects of Ignatian Spirituality. They have an app called Pray as you Go, that provides the readings of the day, and reflections upon them, as well as guides for praying in the Ignatian way. Below are links to the Examen section of the site, but do investigate further. Also provided is the link to Jesuits.org that also provide excellent guidance for Ignatian Prayer.

Spiritual Exercises

Other spiritual exercises include reading a passage of the Bible and imagining yourself within the scene. For those of us fortunate to have a vivid imagination, this can be a really special way of praying. You may find yourself interacting with individuals from the Bible, including Jesus, in a way that feels very authentic. This is rich ground for learning about the Bible, and about yourself. This is called Imaginative Contemplation. There are also ways of using prayer for discernment and self-knowledge as part of Ignatian teaching.

Please explore the Jesuit websites for many more great resources about this sort of prayer.
