Together in a Moment
The Mass of Chrism
Towards the beginning of Holy Week, each Diocese will hold a Chrism Mass. During this Mass, priests from the diocese will renew their priestly vows, and the oils that are used for anointing during Baptism, Confirmation and Anointing of the Sick, will be blessed by the Bishop.
The Mass is a wonderful opportunity for the people from many different Parishes to come together and worship as one.
Look out for the time for the Chrism Mass in your diocese, and go along if you haven’t before. A Chrism Mass is a truly special occasion and can mark the beginning of your Easter celebration.
This short video was filmed at the 2024 Chrism Mass held in Wellington. It was held at St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral while the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart was still undergoing earthquake strengthening. Archbishop Paul Martin explains the significance of the Mass and of the oils during his Homily.
